Complementary to the burglary detection and warning system, the video surveillance system allows the beneficiary to visually control the activity in the areas of interest of the protected site.

A video surveillance system (CCTV) may, in principle, consist of one or more video cameras and a video image processing device such as a DVR (digital video recorder) or NVR (network video recorder) used to manage and record the images transmitted by the installed video cameras.

The performance of a video surveillance and recording system depends on several factors – the resolution of the cameras, the possibility of their orientation, the distance and viewing angle of the cameras, the area and brightness of the location, the recording quality of the video images, etc.

The video surveillance system can be interfaced with a anti-theft alarm system, access control equipment, etc.

The following components may be integrated into the structure of a video surveillance system:

Video image recording system, DVR – NVR

It is used for managing, recording and storing video images and audio, where applicable. Video recording can be manually set, automatically activated, or scheduled at specific times or days of the week, or programmed to detect camera motion.

Video images are stored in digital format on a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) recording medium, from which they can be later retrieved, saved and/or archived where appropriate.

  • Video camera

Depending on where they are installed – indoors or outdoors – the desired image quality, the distance from where they are installed to the subject or target under surveillance, the area and angle of visibility, the brightness of the space under surveillance and the purpose for which they are installed, video cameras can be mounted outdoors or indoors, visible or concealed (hidden, masked), fixed or mobile (manually or electronically adjustable, both horizontally and vertically).

  • Camera housings

These are used for mounting the indoor camera outside the lens, to ensure that the camera operates under optimum conditions and to protect the camera from external factors (water, humidity, dust, high or low temperatures, etc.).

  • Bracket for mounting the camera or camera housing

It is either fixed (manually adjustable and fixed in a certain direction) or mobile (equipped with a motor for remote electronic control of the camera).

  • Infrared (IR) illuminator

Usually integrated in the camera housing or may be installed additionally, and used to illuminate at night (in the infrared spectrum) the space under surveillance.

  • Video image processing system – video processor (Multiplexer, Switch, Quad)

Processes images transmitted by video cameras and manages them for viewing in different modes and formats on one or more monitors. Depending on the number of cameras and the image processing system chosen, one or more images can be displayed on a monitor, manually or automatically, in random or programmed mode, by dividing the screen into 4, 8, 9, 16 or more images (spli-screen).

  • Video image display device (Monitor)

A monitor is a device used to display video images. Depending on the video image processing device, one or more images may be displayed simultaneously on the monitor screen.
